Herbert Paul Gettemy was born on July 2, 1921 to Homer George and Mary Emma Gettemy in Youngsville, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Herbert was the fourth of five children. His father worked as an insurance agent.

Herbert moved to Chester County at some point, but documentation was unavailable to determine when or where.

Herbert joined the Army Air Force March 2, 1943.
