McPhillips, John

John McPhillips, Jr. was born on June 4, 1913 to John and Elizabeth Chambers McPhillips who lived in Easttown Township, Pennsylvania.John Jr. was the second of four children. His father lived and worked on Westwood farms, a local cattle and horse ranch. John was known as a horseman.

John entered service in the Army July 2, 1943.  After basic training, John was assigned to an infantry unit and sent overseas to the European Theater of Operations in December.

Private First Class John McPhillips Jr. was Killed In Action on April 12, 1945 in Germany.

John was reported Missing In Action in a telegram to his sister Helen, since both his parents predeceased him. Helen received a later telegram on Saturday May 5th that John was Killed In Action.

 A memorial Mass was held at the St. Katharine’s Church in Wayne on May 12th. John was buried in a local military cemetery. 

After the war his remains were returned for burial in his home country. Services were held at the Mauger Funeral Home on January 20, 1949. Mass was held at St Patrick’s Church in Malvern. Internment was at the Great Valley Presbyterian Cemetery.

Both of John’s brothers served during the war, Thomas in the Army Air Corps, and Robert in the Infantry.
